Lesson 8 Practice: Chord Substitutions

In Lesson 8, you learned how you can substitute one chord for another, to develop a more interesting arrangement for a song. In these practice exercises, we will work through the substitution charts in each key.

Click the "Worksheets" button to view and print the worksheets we will use in these practice exercises. To save paper, I have included the directions just once, at the start, and put two charts on each page. You will need to print out these charts as you work along with the exercises.

In this online lesson, I have included a "filled in" version of the Substitution Chart with each audio clip, so that you can check your work. I encourage you to try to fill in the paper version before you look at the version here, so that you get the benefit of learning how to complete the substitution charts on your own.

You will also need a copy of the Major Scale Chart as you work through these exercises. You should have filled out your own copy of this chart as part of one of the earlier lessons, but if not, you can click here to view and print a filled-in Major Scale Chart.

In addition to the Major Scale Chart, you can also work with the online version of the Circle of Fifths tool. Click this link to bring up the tool (in a separate tab or window). As we work through each key, click the arrows to turn the chart until the "1" is pointing to the key we are in - and then you will be able to read off what the 2, 3, 4 and other chords are in that key.

As I mentioned in the introduction to these exercises, I encourage you to print out the Substitution Charts and fill them in yourself before looking at the answers here.

For each Substitution Chart, we will go through a set of exercises; here are the instructions for these exercises. These directions appear at the top of the Substitution Charts worksheet you printed and filled in earlier, so I'm not going to repeat them for each exercise.
